TOURIST HOT SPOT: KOTA KINABALU WETLANDS
Just a couple of kilometres from the busy and noisy Kota Kinabalu city, lies the serene and tranquil Kota Kinabalu Wetland Center. Not so long time ago, this place used to be called the "City Bird Sanctuary". But now, this whole place (24 hectares) is covered with mangrove forest and is being used as a model wetland center for the sole purpose of conservation, education, recreation, tourism and most importantly, for research which is being managed by a local NGO, Sabah Wetlands Conservation Society.
Walking along the boardwalk for 45-minutes (1.5 km) will definitely give you the peace and calm you wouldn't get in the city. With all of the interesting birds to look at as they casually sit on the branches near you or the different plants and animals that roam the sanctuary, and the unique ecosystem of the mangrove forest that grows on salt water, there are a lot to discover here.
Up to date, there are about 80 species of birds can be seen here at the sanctuary in harmony with the other wildlife that took cover here, including the monitor lizard, fiddler crabs, mudskipper and many other rare and common animals and insects.
