WEEKEND ESCAPE: KELAPA BAKAR, COCONUT PUDDING AND LOKAN PANGGANG
A special you ought to try when you’re here is the “lokan panggang” (barbecued clam) – first soaked with warm water before it is marinated with spices including ginger and later barbecued, your visit to Kota Kinabalu will not be complete without feasting at one of the wooden stalls at Salut. It’s only RM12 per set so whatcha waiting for?!
Allergic to seafood..? Fret not! Try the local coconut dessert!
Although loved by many, “kelapa
bakar” is an acquired taste; unlike fresh cocout juice, it tastes like a combination
of fermented coconut (sweet and sour) and Chinese traditional corn soup. Priced
at only RM3 per “kelapa bakar”, you really don’t have an excuse not to try this
local dessert.
If “kelapa bakar” is not your thing, you might want to try the
traditionally prepared coconut pudding – milky and it’s not as sweet as commercial
coconut pudding, but definitely just as delicious if not more!
