WHERE TO SHOP FOR.. SNACKS!
Whenever
someone talks about what to bring home whenever they visit KK, people are
spoiled with choices and often they don’t really have a clue to know what is
really special in KK. KK is heaven for shoppers, adrenaline junkies and foodies.
Seafood, handicrafts and souvenirs as well as accessories are some of the
favorite things visitors love to bring home. But when you are not sure if your
family and friend would like the choice of the accessories and decorations you
picked for them, it is always best to get them something they can taste and savor
because who can say no to food, right! Here are
a few things unique in Kota Kinabalu you can bring home for your family and friends.
Located at Suria Sabah
Shopping Mall, Sabah Delights is located on the 3rd floor next to
City Grocer. Sabah Delights sells various local delicacies – you can find
different pre-packaged food products to fresh coconut and mango pudding here!
Tenom Coffee is
extremely famous amongst locals and visitors. Tenom Coffee is celebrated
favorite because of its unique taste – you gotta have a sip to truly understand
what we’re on about. Better purchase a few packets before you fly home,
otherwise you’d be craving for our very own Tenom Coffee! Sabah produces its own
coffee beans and even people from our neighbour states such as visitors from
the Peninsular Malaysia would stock up a few to bring it back!
Luwak Black Diamond
Coffee, also known as civet coffee, is the beans of coffee berries eaten and
excreted by Asian Palm Civet. Intensive farming is involved in producing such
coffee and although Luwak Coffee comes from a form of processing and not really
known as part of the variety of coffee, it has been considered the most expensive
coffee in the world!
Amplang a famous local snack - also known as Sabah Spanish Mackerel Crackers, it is crunchy and also comes in prawn
flavor and very much favored by the locals as well. You gotta try this one!
Kiuh Cincin (ring crackers) is a
famous traditional snack in Sabah. It is made from sugar, rice flour, and gula Melaka (brown sugar) and molded into the shape of joined rings and fried twice to achieve the golden
crunchy texture. It has a different kind of sweetness thanks to the brown sugar and is often eaten during a rainy day complemented with a cup of hot Tenom coffee.
Coconut Candy is one of the oldest local
favorites and it still hold a special place in our hearts. Made from
coconut and brown sugar, it is nearly impossible for anyone not to fall in love with this rock hard candy!
If you think the above are too "old school" for your taste, Kota Kinabalu also produces its
own chocolate series and they are all handmade. For those who prefer less sweet chocolate, dark chocolate is also available.
Yet another all time favorite snack is Kara Squid or Dry Squid that comes in 2 flavors – original and spicy. The original flavor is coated with sugar and it is a baked snack.
Last but not least, Sabah's bragging rights include its geographical location. Thanks to that, we have many coconut trees and we are one of the major producers of virgin coconut oil. It helps to increase human’s immune system, metabolism
rate, reduces the risk of diabetes, and helps in weight lost etc. Show your family and friends that you care!
