TOURIST HOT SPOT: ST MICHAEL'S CHURCH PENAMPANG


The St. Michael's Church in Penampang was initiated by Fr. August Wachter in September 1936. The church's foundation was laid on the same month, but the construction was called off because of the World War II. Nonetheless, the church survives the bombing during the war and its construction continued in 1947.


Today, the St. Michael's Church is the oldest standing church in Sabah, located on a steep hill on the far side of Penampang town, which is approximately 25-30 minutes drive from the city.



Getting There:
To visit St. Michael church from Kota Kinabalu city, visitors need to take bus number 13A from the bus station in front of Marina Court to Donggongon. The fare for each person will be RM1.50. 

Upon reaching Donggongon, take the bus headed to Kampung Babah and ask to be dropped off at St. Michael church. Total bus fare is RM1 per person.

Or to save you from all the hassle, you can just take a taxi from the city, and ask to be taken to the church directly. The taxi fare will be RM25 in total.
